MeekieShermicya “Meekie” Singleton-Executive Divva

Born in New Orleans, La, October ‘89. “Meekie” learned as a young child how to overcome struggles. In Her dad was incarcerated at the age of 11 months, soon after, her mother started her battle/addiction to drugs.  Causing her grandmother to step in and raise her along with her oldest 3 siblings. Her grandmother instilled God, good morals, and character inside of each of the children. Living life and growing up without parents gave “Meekie” a feeling of emptiness. “I would pray to God for a real family everyday” says Shermicya. At the age of 11 “Meekie’s mom came and got her and her three siblings, to live with her and three additional siblings she had during her addiction. Thinking hers prayers were totally answered, “Meekie” learned the struggle had just begun. Her mom moved the family around a lot, never stayed in one place too long, different schools, different faces; she relapsed quite a few times, forcing her and her oldest sister to pick up the slack. Soon enough she grew tired of that. It was in the 8th grade, she decided to run away while she was on one of her binges, she didn’t want to leave the younger kids, but she figured she had to do what was best. Her and her oldest sister ran to the loving arms of their stepmom, she welcomed them into her home, and things began to look up. I graduated high school with a dream of becoming an actress, I will reach that goal soon. I am no longer in school, but I wish to further my education in exterior architectural design. The year before Hurricane Katrina, her and her a few members of her family moved to Atlanta, GA, she thanks God she wasn’t there, but she’s grateful to him even more that her family was safe. One thing she is extremely grateful to Katrina for, is united her with Divva Jayda, who had many similarities as a child, but also knew how to preserver thru her circumstances and has a heart of giving, just as I do. It’s an honor to be a part of this organization. While I’m chasing my dream I’m going to help others, the way I was helped, I can only do it by the grace of God. Team DIVVA!!!!
